We have just moved into the new trendy area of Crystal Palace aka nappy village, the flat is a nice big space, three stories with four bedrooms.
My first choice for choosing this place was the amount of natural light that floods the entire flat, second is the original periodic features and third the amount of space.
The first room for me to tackle is the nursery…
The nursery is a nice size with a lot of natural light, beautiful high ceilings and large windows. Whoever lived here previously was in love with the colour white, as this is the main colour in the entire flat. This works perfectly for me, as it feels like I am starting off with a blank canvas.
The Mood Board
I wanted to keep the light and airy feel in the room but also creating a tranquil and intimate space, for my baby girl and I to connect in.
I knew I would want to bring in an array of colours, but I also knew if I did this without thinking I could make the room look very tacky. For me having colours within a babies room is important as colours enhance and stimulates the mind, babies are more likely to recognise these colours more easily as they get older.
The two main colours I wanted to use in the room, as focal points were, Polished Pebble by Dulux and Fairy Dust by Crown. I also wanted to incorporate gold through furnishings as an additional focal colour. The rest of the colours would come through other soft furnishings within the room.
In today’s world, it is so easy to create a feature wall, honestly whilst searching I suddenly became lost with all the offerings on the net and felt overwhelmed by choice. The best thing to do is to visualise the design you would like on your wall before searching for it. I knew I wanted something pretty, such as colourful flowers or a large tree with colourful petals over the cot bed. The wall decal I finally chose was a Multi Coloured Tree by Vinylimpression.co.uk. They are great as they have a variety of designs for all areas of the home. The instructions were not very helpful, but they do have a video on their site, which is helpful. The quality is excellent and I have not had any problems since the tree has gone up.
Society6 Cushion Covers – Society 6 is a very cool site that commissions’ independent artists to produce work for home furnishings and clothes, definitely a site to check out if you want some unique pieces for your room or wardrobe. The cushion covers I chose were the:
Sheep Skin Rug El Calafate – Argentina – We went travelling around Argentina for 3 weeks at the start of the year. In a small town called El Calafate near the glaciers, I found this beautiful sheepskin rug. It is very thick and soft and the best part of it is the hairs do not come loose.
Rocking Chair – Gumtree.co.uk – A nursing chairing can be very comforting for parents, especially when you have to feed throughout the night. All you want to do is feed the baby and both get back to sleeping. I decided I would definitely need one and went on the hunt on Gumtree. I figured it would be more cost effective and fun to get an old one and up-cycle it myself, which is exactly what I did.
Ormolu Highlife Mirror – Dunelm Mill – I wanted to add some opulence in my baby girls room and I just fell in love with this grand mirror, I also thought it would reflect the space and the most key point it brought into the nursery was the antique gold colour I was looking for. Dunelm Mill is a great place for all things home; they have a good selection and variety of furnishings, which is also very affordable.
Amelia Wardrobe and Chest – Next Home – Trying to find furniture for a nursery can be difficult and in my experience as soon as you start searching for nursery furniture the price rises by over 50%. I saw this two-piece set in Next Home and felt it brought the room together; it also worked well with the style of the room. If you are planning on spending a good amount on a set, then bear in mind as your child gets older they will need more room for their clothes. For me, these two pieces were perfect, as the wardrobe comes with a draw and is long enough to add an extra clothes rail. The chest of draws come with a nice amount of draws and the three smaller draws is a nice touch for accessories as your baby gets older.
Multi Coloured Tree and Gold Metallic Heart Decals – Vinyl impression – I wanted to incorporate colour into the bedroom but in a subtle way, I felt adding a wall decal would be good as it is easy to take off whenever you feel it is time for a change without too much mess. You can also get creative without actually having to be an artist or spending too much money.
Window treatment – Shutter Studios – The window treatments I chose were shutters as this was what I had planned for the entire flat, however if I were to choose another treatment, I would have gone for roman blinds as I feel they had warmth within a space and sit nicely on a huge window.
And now for the grand unveiling of the nursery, I think it is looking pretty nice, what do you think?
